Rules

There are four main types of mountain biking: cross-country, dirt jumping, downhill and free ride. Each type employs different rules and regulations.

Description

Mountain Bicycling is a type of cycling where riders traverse rough terrain on bicycles outfitted with wide tires and shock absorbers. Mountain biking is the riding of bicycles over rough, rugged terrain. To negotiate this terrain, bikes are equipped wide, knobby tires, large frame tubing and massive shock absorbers. The sport calls for a great deal of endurance and self-reliance due to the nature of the environment where the sport takes place.

History

Mountain biking began in the United States in the 1970's, when riders began outfitting their bikes with specialized parts that could handle the rigors of off-road riding. By the early 1980's these unique bikes were being mass-produced. This helped to spread the sport throughout the United States, and eventually the rest of the world. In 1988, the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame opened in Crested Butte, Colorado.
